Grand Canyon by RV: Everything You Need to Know

Standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon for the first time is one of those experiences that genuinely stops you in your tracks. No photo prepares you for the scale of it — a mile deep, 277 miles long, and carved over five million years by the Colorado River.

The good news: you can park your RV within walking distance of the rim. Here's how to make the most of it.

South Rim vs. North Rim

Most visitors — and virtually all RV travelers — head to the South Rim. It's open year-round, has the most developed facilities, and offers the iconic views you've seen in every photo.

The North Rim is quieter and arguably more beautiful, but it's only open mid-May through mid-October, sits at 8,000 feet elevation, and has limited RV facilities. It's worth the detour if you're already in Utah, but for a first visit, start with the South Rim.

Getting There

The South Rim entrance is near Tusayan, Arizona, about 60 miles north of Williams on Highway 64. The drive from Williams is straightforward and RV-friendly.

Size restrictions: Vehicles over 22 feet are not permitted on Desert View Drive east of Grandview Point. Plan your route accordingly.

Campgrounds

Mather Campground (South Rim)

The main campground at the South Rim, with 327 sites and electric hookups available. It's a short walk or shuttle ride from the rim. Reservations open 6 months in advance on Recreation.gov and fill up fast in summer.

Desert View Campground

Located 25 miles east of Grand Canyon Village near the Desert View Watchtower. First-come, first-served, no hookups. A quieter alternative with its own stunning views.

Ten-X Campground (Kaibab National Forest)

Just outside the park boundary near Tusayan. No hookups, but a good overflow option when Mather is full. First-come, first-served.

Must-Do Experiences

Rim Trail

The paved Rim Trail runs 13 miles along the South Rim and is accessible to all fitness levels. You don't have to hike the whole thing — even a mile or two gives you views that will stay with you forever.

Bright Angel Trail

The most popular hiking trail into the canyon. Day hikers should turn around at the 1.5-mile resthouse or 3-mile resthouse — the canyon is deceptively difficult to hike out of. Start early and carry more water than you think you need.

Desert View Drive

A 25-mile scenic drive along the East Rim with multiple overlooks. The Desert View Watchtower at the end is a historic landmark with panoramic views.

Sunset at Hopi Point

Hopi Point is widely considered the best sunset viewpoint on the South Rim. Arrive 30–45 minutes early to get a spot.

Driving Tips Inside the Park

The South Rim is served by a free shuttle system during peak season (March–November). Leave your RV at the campground and use the shuttles — parking near the rim is extremely limited and stressful in a large rig.

Side Trips Worth Taking

  • Sedona (2 hours south): Red rock formations, art galleries, and excellent hiking. RV-friendly with several campgrounds nearby.
  • Antelope Canyon (2.5 hours east): The slot canyon you've seen in every photography magazine. Tours fill up fast — book in advance.
  • Horseshoe Bend (2.5 hours east): A short hike to one of the most photographed river bends in the world.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) offer the best combination of comfortable temperatures and manageable crowds. Summer is hot at the rim (90°F+) and scorching in the canyon. Winter brings snow and solitude — and some of the most dramatic views of the year.

The Grand Canyon rewards slow travel. Give yourself at least two nights to watch the light change across the canyon at different times of day. It's a different place at sunrise than at sunset, and different again under a full moon.
